Debating


Debates are a vital and interesting way to put forward, as a team, an argument that is well , well researched, well-structured and persuasive. A debate occurs when two opposing teams of three face each other in front of an audience.Each person in each team has a specific role to play.
Roles in a Debate
A Debate has two teams:
The AFFIRMATIVE argues for the allocated topic
The NEGATIVE argues against the allocated topic
The amount of time allowed for each speaker varies, but generally all speakers have three (3) minutes to speak.

Affirmative

(1) Speaker One
  • defines the topic
  • present's the team's position on the topic
  • presents the first two arguments to prove their case

(3) Speaker Two
  • presents one ot two arguments to prove their case
  • rebuts negative speaker one's first two arguments
(5) Speaker Three
  • cannot introduce new points
  • rebuts all outstanding Negative team's points
  • sums up and closes their case

Negative

(2) Speaker One
  • presents the team's position on the
    topic
  • presents the first two arguments to prove their case
  • rebuts the affirmative team's first point / argument
(4) Speaker Two
  • presents two or three arguments to prove their case
  • rebuts affirmative speaker two's first two arguments
(6) Speaker Three
  • cannot introduce new points
  • rebuts all outstanding affirmative
    team's points
  • sums up and closes their case
